Job Title: Facilities Caretaker
Location: Crescent Site on 127th St. (2756 127 St., Surrey) and Sunnyside Site on 24th Ave. (15639 24th Ave., Surrey). Semiahmoo Site is under redevelopment (15385 Semiahmoo Ave., White Rock).
Hours and Salary: $25/hour at 35 hours/week
Job Description: The Facilities Caretaker is responsible for the overall cleanliness, maintenance, and security of Peninsula United Church’s properties, including the Crescent Site (127th St.), Sunnyside Site (24th Ave.), and oversight of the Semiahmoo Site (currently under redevelopment). This role ensures that church facilities remain clean, safe, welcoming, and operational for all activities, events, and rentals. The Facilities Caretaker will work closely with the Operations Manager, staff, volunteers, and external contractors to support the church's mission and activities. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and General Maintenance:
- Perform routine cleaning of all areas, including sanctuary, narthex, meeting rooms, offices, restrooms, kitchen, and halls.
- Dust horizontal surfaces, sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors as needed.
- Clean windows, mirrors, and glass doors.
- Ensure trash and recycling are properly disposed of, and restock restroom and kitchen supplies.
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness and ensure renters follow proper use guidelines.
- Maintain and clean outdoor areas, including sidewalks, parking lots, and lawns.
- Regularly inspect storage areas for organization, pest control, and water issues.
Property Repairs & Maintenance:
- Conduct minor repairs, including fixing leaky faucets, changing furnace filters, replacing light bulbs, and unclogging drains.
- Coordinate with external contractors for major maintenance projects and repairs in consultation with the Operations Manager.
- Maintain an inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies, ordering replacements as needed.
- Monitor HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, reporting issues promptly.
- Oversee landscaping and grounds maintenance, coordinating with external contractors for lawn mowing, snow removal, and general upkeep.
Event Setup and Facility Support:
- Assist with the setup and teardown of tables, chairs, and equipment for worship services, coffee hours, church meetings, and special events.
- Ensure facilities are properly arranged for renters and church events.
Building Security & Emergency Response:
- Open and close buildings as required for events and rentals, ensuring doors and windows are locked and secure.
- Perform routine security inspections of all properties.
- Be the primary contact for emergency services (RCMP, Fire Department, and security contractors).
- Respond to emergencies promptly, coordinating with the Operations Manager when further action is needed.
- Report any security concerns, damages, or safety hazards immediately.
Tenant & Community Relations:
- Interact with renters and community members in a courteous and professional manner.
- Address concerns or facility needs promptly.
- Ensure renters follow the church’s property use policies and guidelines.
Compliance & Record Keeping:
- Maintain records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and security incidents.
- Ensure properties comply with all local health, safety, and accessibility regulations.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in facility maintenance, custodial work, or property caretaking.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general repair work.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, and working in various weather conditions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with tenants, vendors, and staff.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Must be available for on-call emergencies and flexible to work various shifts as needed.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
