On November 7 an interfaith statement signed by 28 leaders of the world’s major religions was delivered to the President of COP28, which was held in Dubai on November 30 - December 13, 2023.
The statement appealed to the delegates to take “transformative action” and “to adopt a rapid, just transition away from fossil fuels”.
It also contained 18 commitments that the signatories commit to carryout, which include a duty to, “champion the development of a faith-based ecological narrative” and “lead the pursuit…of sustainable lower carbon lifestyles”.
The statement was signed by the President of the World Council of Churches (WCC), a worldwide Christian organization of which the United Church of Canada is a member.
